WASPS coach Lee Blackett felt his side did not get the reward they deserved. “I am pretty gutted.
“Sometimes the amount of effort you put in, you don’t get the reward it deserves,” he said.
“We conceded four tries but it didn’t feel that way.
It felt like we defended really well which gave us opportunities to get in the opposition half. We just never seemed to get enough of the ball in the second half.
“There was some really good fight from us close to the line. That’s probably the frustrating thing, but the effort I’ve just got to applaud. We keep backing that up, we will get wins.”
Exeter coach Ali Hepher said: “We went into a bit of a safe mode [after taking the lead] and that lost us big games last year.
“Mentally, we’ve got to nail that bit down. A few guys were just drifting around the field but second half, we kept at it.
“It showed real mental resilience that after we got knocked back from fivemetre pressure we hit back. A lot of teams would have folded when they cleared their lines, but when we got our chances later on, we were clinical.”
