RYNO Pieterse’s horizontal hit on Bordeaux scrum-half Maxime Lucu demanded a long sentence.
The Top 14 disciplinary panel decided that the South African’s grotesque impersonation of a human missile justified banning him for 24 weeks, almost six months.
There did not appear to be a single mitigating factor worth reducing the punishment by a week or two. And yet the panel saw fit to halve the punishment basically because Pieterse apologised for what they described as ‘the high level of danger of his action’.
