THE Cardiff Blues no doubt have many sound reasons of an almost exclusively financial nature behind their joint plan with the Welsh Rugby Union to redevelop the Arms Park. One can be dismissed without fear of contradiction – that they need more room to cope with the crowds.
Wales’ capital region have been struggling to find one with the exception of the Christmas derby against the Newport Dragons when almost 12,000 turned up – precisely one quarter of the 48,000 who turned up for a Cardiff-Newport game in 1951, then a world record.
