After weeks of speculations, Matt Kvesic’s move to Devon was confirmed as Exeter announced he has signed a three-year deal from next summer.
The Gloucester openside, who is Rob Baxter‘s first capture ahead of next season, started his career his career in Worcester in 2003 before moving to Kingsholm in 2013.
“It’s a great move for me and one that I am very excited about,” said Kvesic. “Over the last few years the Chiefs have shown they are one of the top teams in the country. They reached the final last season and it looks like they’ll be in the top four again at least this season.
“Looking from the outside you can see they play a grand brand of rugby, they’ve got quality players right across the squad, and that the stadium and the facilities are first class.
“For me, I just felt it was the right time to have a new challenge in my career and I think moving down to the Chiefs will maybe help re-ignite a few areas of my game.
“I can’t thank Gloucester enough for all that they have done for me,” he continued. “It’s a great rugby club with fantastic supporters and I will always be grateful for the opportunities they have given me.”
Baxter, who had tried to sign the former Warriors player before his move to Gloucester, added: “We were probably a little disappointed not to sign him when he moved from Worcester initially. We would have liked to have signed him then, but for various reasons – people will be aware of our standing and Matt’s situation as well – that was the choice he made at the time.
“I’m not the kind of person, though, who if the player doesn’t come to you the first time you give up on them and that’s their only opportunity. We’ve been following Matt for quite a while and I’ve liked a lot of the qualities I’ve seen of him.
“Some of the qualities we saw at Worcester will be some of the ones we want to re-ignite in him that we maybe haven’t seen quite so much of at Gloucester. I think at Gloucester he’s become very defensively organised and defensively-biased and we’d like to see him become a bit more of an attacking player and an attacking option with us, and add a bit more balance to his game.”
