Toulon will have a chance to defend their European crown as they beat Munster 24-16 in Marseille in the Heineken Cup semi-final today.
Simon Zebo scored the only try of the game for the Irish but Jonny Wilkinson kicked 21 points for the French giants – along with long range penalty from Delon Armitage – to book their place in the final at the Millennium Stadium on May 24 where they will take on Saracens.
Wilkinson edged the reigning champions 9-3 in front after 27 minutes with two penalties to one from Ian Keatley.
Toulon were then reduced to 14 men after Juan Martin Fernandez-Lobbe was harshly sent to the bin for accidentally making contact with the head of Conor Murray.
Keatley kicked two penalties in the next ten minutes but each time Munster made a mess of the resulting restart and Wilkinson slotted a drop goal and a penalty to make it 15-9.
Toulon even extended the lead to 18-9 on stroke of half-time with Delon Armitage kicking a monstrous penalty as Munster’s discipline let them down once again.
The French came out flying out of the blocks in the second half and Steffon Armitage thought he went over in the corner but a last-ditch tackle from Zebo meant his foot was in touch when he touched down.
Zebo then went from try-saver to try-scorer going over in the corner as Munster showed their resilience to close to gap to only two points.
The game lost its shape with both side throwing the ball around and it was Munster’s turn to be reduced to 14 men as Keith Earls was sent to the bin for tackling David Smith without the ball.
Wilkinson slotted the resulting penalty and Toulon had a five-point lead with 13 minutes to go.
Munster had Toulon under pressure but they could not score again and Wilkinson sealed the deal for Toulon who will play their second consecutive Heineken Cup final in four weeks.
