Instead of wasting time, Houlding chose to form his own club – and Liverpool was born. Liverpool grew to become a member of the league in 1893 and they were promoted to first division after just one season in the second division. They established themselves as the ones to watch from the very beginning, and they went on to win League titles in 1901, 1906, 1922 and 1923. They remained a popular club for decades but in the post-WWII period, they weren’t too consistent. They claimed their fourth league title in 1947 and then were relegated to the second division once again in 1954. Enter Bill Shankly – he was hired as manager not long after this and his very first order of business with Liverpool FC was to release the entire first team squad. He was also responsible for turning the storage room of the club into the Boot Room – which you’ll see during the tour. It was the secret meeting place for club managers and while Shankly was considered to be rather unorthodox, his methods worked and they made their way back to the first division in 1962. Two years later, Shankly’s Liverpool won the league in 1964 and again in 1966 and 1973. In that time, they also won the 1965 and the 1974 FA Cups. The cherry on top was the 1973 UEFA Cup that was won, too. Shankly resigned in 1974 and left the club to Bob Paisley.

The good news is that this change didn’t stop Liverpool from continuing to boss the football leagues. They remained consistent throughout Paisley’s nine years 9 in charge, winning six more league titles and three league cups. They pushed themselves all over Europe, winning one more UEFA Cup and three further European Cups all between 1976 and 1981. Paisley retired in 1983 and Joe Fagan continued the team’s reign, leading them to a Treble in the first season he was in charge. The stadium was modernized over the decade of 1963 – 1973, and the main stand was torn down and rebuilt entirely. The very last modification was done in 1998 and that’s when the second section of Anfield Road Stand was built.
