Scotland U20s prop Callum Smyth enjoyed the ‘best six months of his life’ this year when he took part in the Macphail Rugby Scholarship in South Africa.
Having begun in 2005, the annual scholarship from January to June sends three promising Scottish players on a playing experience in South Africa. Previous recipients of the scholarship include Grant Gilchrist (2011), George Turner (2011), Jonny Gray (2012) and Finn Russell (2013).
