As a young prop, improving at the set piece is paramount for Cameron Orr so it is no surprise he jumped at the opportunity to be coached by scrum guru Laurie Fisher at Gloucester.
Joining the Cherry and White meant leaving his home in Australia but after speaking to his brother Harrison, who joined Newcastle from Ealing Trailfinders over the summer, it didn’t take long for him to pack his bags and land in England.
“My brother has done very well in England for the past few years and it motivates me to follow in his footsteps,” he told The Rugby Paper. “We talked a lot and it made sense for me to move to the UK as a young prop. It’s the best place for me to develop.
“I’d been training with the Waratahs’ wider group last season and I think Laurie spotted a few tapes of me and the club enquired about me.
“Gloucester are renowned for produced great players and I intend to put my best foot forward to be one of those. I’m not the finished product but I’m sure Laurie can help me becoming a great prop.
“He’s proven he can help players reach their full potential over the years and that’s what I hope to do here.
“I’ve been at the club for just over a month and it’s been great. The boys are fantastic in helping the youngsters. It’s a great environment.
“I knew of a lot of people like Willie Heinz, James Hook, John Afoa and Richard Hibbard because of what they’ve achieved in their careers.
“Training with these kind of players has been a bit surreal to be honest but it’s fantastic.
“If you think there’s also Trevor Woodman as a coach here, I very much consider myself a bit of a sponge right now.
“I’m picking up on everything they do whether that’s on or off the field. They know what it takes to be one of the best front row around.
“As a loosehead, I suppose it’s for me to get turned around by John a few times in training. It’s all part of the apprenticeship.”
The 21-year-old, who represented Australia at the 2014 and 2015 Junior World Championships, is part of the Cherry and Whites’ professional squad and he is looking forward to any opportunity he’ll get to put on the shirt.
“I’m in the professional squad so I’ll just have to work hard to make sure that when the call comes for me to play I’m ready to go.
“It’s a huge opportunity for me and I really want to make an impact every time I get on the field.
“We have a game in Leinster for pre-season where I hope to be involved to put my hand up early and see where it takes me ahead of the new season.”
