It’s been long but we’re eager to get cracking really. We had a game against the Ospreys a few weeks back which was a bit early for us but it was good to play rugby again. We had our second game yesterday against Northampton.
The end of the tunnel is very near?
We’ve worked a lot on our fitness for the first eight weeks before moving on to the rugby. It looked very long on paper but it’s gone very quickly to be honest.
All set for the season?
We’ve got a couple more pre-season games against Worcester so hopefully we’ll be ready for the visit of Sale in three weeks.
Any infamous Sarries trips this summer?
It’s been difficult because some of the boys are away at the World Cup so we kept it low key. We did have a long weekend to Budapest which was nice to get the new boys involved.
How do you look back at last season?
It was fantastic! After losing two finals the year before we were desperate to win a trophy so to win the Premiership, and the way in which we did it, was pretty special. We’re hungry for more.
Can you retain your title?
It’d be huge. It’s an odd season with the World Cup and the whole squad will be needed but that’s the plan.
The target on you back looks bigger now?
I’m not sure why but we always seem to be the team to beat and everyone wants our scalp. To be honest we take it as a mark of respect for what we’ve been trying to build over the past few seasons.
Do you thrive on it?
You could say that. The boys enjoy the challenge and it helps us focus on making sure we perform every week.
What about the Champions Cup?
It’s a big challenge in this World Cup year but we’re looking to build on what we did last year. We haven’t got an easy group so if we can get out of it we’ll be up there challenging for that title.
What did you lack in the past two years?
We lost to Toulon and Clermont who are the two best teams in Europe so there’s nothing to be ashamed of even if we didn’t play well on the day. Consistency in performance will be key for us.
Is it becoming impossible to compete in both the Premiership and Europe?
The French have been saying that for years until Toulon did it and the Premiership is just as competitive, if not more so, as the Top 14. You can’t guarantee you’ll win going into a game. It’s difficult but, hopefully, we can do it in the short future.
What about your own performances last season?
We have a very competitive squad which is great for me because I keep improving. I played a lot last season and I was very pleased with that. Keeping my standards is my biggest goal to put myself in the frame when the big games come next spring.
111 games at 24 is not too shabby?
I’ve very proud of that. The club has been fantastic for me and I was lucky to play in some big games already. But I want to keep going and play 200 or even 300 games for the club.
Do you feel like a leader in the squad?
I’ve grown up massively in the past couple of season and I definitely feel different in and around the squad. We have some great leaders in the pack and I’m trying to emulate them when I’m on the pitch. I’m really enjoying my new role to be honest.
Thinking about England?
Of course, but playing well for Saracens week on week against top opposition is all I can do so that’s my sole focus. I’ll see if an opportunity arises.
Favourite cheat meal?
I don’t like anything too heavy so a Thai after a game is probably my favourite meal.
If not rugby what would you be doing?
I’d definitely be working in sport. Maybe a rugby coach.
Three special dinner guests?
Will Ferrell, Paolo Di Canio and Peter Kay.
Best and worst banter at Sarries?
Chris Ashton keeps using old material which is getting boring now. David Strettle was the best before he left.
Best and worst dressed?
Alex Goode is the worst hands down while Maro Itoje, who loves a turtle neck, is the best.
