1. Fitness testing
As a founder member of the ‘Fat Club’ it probably comes as no surprise that I’m not a big fan of fitness testing! Weekends can be ruined by worrying about Monday mornings and what the test results will bring. The anaerobic shuttle test where we have to run around poles is the worst one in my opinion.
TRP verdict: I’m afraid there’s a ‘fat chance’ of this getting in.
2. Slim Jims
People who can eat what they want and yet still don’t put any weight on should be sent packing into . Alex Cheeseman would be right at the front of the queue. The upside is that you’d be able to get plenty of them in there! I only have to walk past a butcher’s or a takeaway outlet and I’ll put on a stone. I couldn’t single out one guilty pleasure; all types of food are my weakness.
TRP verdict: The scales have been tipped in your favour on this occasion.
3. Scilly Isles Ferry
Recently we had a pre-season training camp on the Isles of Scilly. To get there we had to take the ferry, called The Scillonian, as there were too many of us in the party to fly. The three-hour crossing is notoriously bad for making people sea-sick, and for a very good reason the boat is called ‘The Stomach Pump’. I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many people sick in one place in my life. Having grown up in Cornwall, I’m normally a good sailor but even I felt pretty rough. Loads of the lads were contemplating jumping overboard, it was that bad. At least we had a good time when we got there!
TRP verdict: Wave goodbye to The Scillonian, it’s going in!
