The looked set to take a 9-3 lead at the break after Dan Carter kicked three penalties against one from Bernard Foley for the but Nehe Milner-Skudder went over for the opening try of the game.
Carter converted from the right touch line to make it 16-3 at the interval and when Ma’a Nonu ran in from 30 metres they had what seemed to be a match-winning 23-3 lead.
But the game was turned on its head with New Zealand full-back Ben Smith was sent to the bin for a tip-tackle on Drew Mitchell.
That gave the Wallabies some hope and they got their first try of the game through David Pocock at the back of a driving maul.
Just before Smith’s time in the bin ended they had a second as Tevita Kuridrani touched down.
Foley converted and in the space of ten minutes it became a six-point game.
Carter settled the All Blacks’ nerves with a drop-goal and although the Wallabies threw the kitchen sink at their defence they couldn’t score again.
Instead from a turnover on their own 22, Smith launched a counter attack and Beauden Barrett won the race to score and secure a deserved win.
