’74 Lions failed to impress the doyen

NO sooner had I finished my trip down memory lane last week with the 1974 Lions than I stumbled across John Reason’s book on the tour – The Unbeaten Lions – which I thought I had lent to a mate never to be seen again. Wrong, it was covered in dust atop one of my bookcases.
I had forgotten how scathing the famously acerbic JR was about the 1974 Lions in comparison to the 1971 Lions. As John covered both tours and many others besides his opinion needs bearing in mind even if it runs counter to the subsequent narrative of the ’74 Lions being the best ever.
