WHAT game do we want? If we asked, ‘what game do we need?’, we would probably get the same answer. For me, it would be an entertaining spectacle, exhibiting speed, skill and power.
How close are we to this? Sadly, a long way off. How can a sport averaging over 20 penalties a game (as in the Premiership), with even more stoppages, and the referee behaving as a coach, constantly telling players what they can and can’t do, provide the spectacle we desire? It can’t.
