Unassuming Charlie, the water carrier

One of the attractions of rugby union is that it is a game which provides a refuge for the likes of Finn Russell and Charlie Faulkner, the no-nonsense former Pontypool, Wales and Lions prop whose autobiography was published this month, nine months after his death at the age of 81.
Faulkner was the quiet one of the Pontypool front row which he made up with Graham Price and Bobby Windsor. Born in Newport during the Second World War, he gained his experience through playing and made his debut for Wales at a time when most players were thinking of retiring.
