AS footballing cavaliers go, Mark Ring of Cardiff and Wales belonged to the Premier League long before anyone had heard of it.
He would delve into his box of tricks whenever the game bored him as it did during a landslide win over London Welsh at the Arms Park more than 30 years ago.
In the hope of keeping the crowd amused, Ring backheeled a conversion against the crossbar.
Rather than apologise to Cardiff for a substandard performance, the Exiles asked that Ring apologise instead, presumably for conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.
