Back-to-back Cup triumphs cemented Gosforth’s place as top club in the land

GOSFORTH won their first John Player Cup Final in 1976, and then when the Queen was celebrating her Silver Jubilee 12 months later, they returned to Twickenham to defend their crowd.
The first northern club to win the competition, who were unknown outside of the North-East for many years, proved that they were the best club side in the land.
They retained their cup crown, won the Sunday Telegraph pennant (an unofficial league competition), and topped the first RFU Northern Merit Table with a 100 per cent record.
