Selection defines coaches. One of the hardest parts of the job is telling players who have given years of service that it is someone else’s time. Eddie Jones is known for his loyalty to those who have served him well, but as the World Cup in France looms, he is not going back as he looks to the future.
“I have spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out how I was going to phase out players for whom I had strong feelings,” said the late American football coach, Bill Walsh. “That was my job. I wasn’t hired to do anything but win.”
