When the moratorium on relegation from the Premiership for this season was announced in mid-February, a new word entered the rugby lexicon, jeopardy.
The BT Sport presenters went to town on it, and it was as if English professional rugby as we know it was doomed. Once teams knew that they were safe they would ease off, meaningless contests would abound, and fans would walk away in droves. I always felt that was total nonsense which misunderstood the nature of competitive sport, and that’s exactly how things have turned out.
