A study co-authored by former England head coach Stuart Lancaster, found that after years of rugby players becoming heavier, the 2019 World Cup suggested the body mass of players had stabilised, perhaps because it had reached its upper limit.
It also found that the heaviest 25 per cent of players at the 1991 World Cup would have been in the lightest category 28 years later in Japan. The average weight of a forward in the top ten countries rose from 102.5kg (16st 2lbs) to 110.7kg (17st 11lbs) while backs went from 83kg (13st 1lb) to 93.4kg (14st 10lbs).
