MARTIN Johnson tended to approach post-match interviews with all the wariness of a bomb-disposal officer confronted by a series of suspicious objects. And yet as captain of Leicester Tigers, win or lose, he was never known to avoid Bleddyn Jones.
“With Bleddyn it wasn’t so much an interview, more of a chat,’’ he tells me. “You weren’t going to be dragged over the coals about something. Chatting to Bleddyn would never have been an issue. Such a lovely, lovely bloke.’’
