GENERALLY the 70s weren’t kind to England but there was a madcap two or three years at the start of the decade when the Red Rose bloomed spectacularly before withering on the vine.
There was a first unbeaten tour of South Africa by any side in the 20th century in 1972 including a Test win at Ellis Park followed 12 months later by an historic victory over New Zealand at Eden Park. There were home wins against Australia and Wales, and England also walked away with the SRU International Sevens at Murrayfield.
