MY big breakthrough came in the mid-90s, after I’d moved to North Harbour to work in the Nike warehouse. I was 19 and Ant Strachan, the former All Black scrum-half, was my training partner at the local club, and took me under his wing.
He moved to Japan in 1996 and I was called into the senior North Harbour squad. I was also selected for New Zealand U21s.
