My long association with Orrell – as player, captain and director of rugby – is down to one man, my games teacher at school, George Seddon. George took me along to the club because the facilities were so much better than what I was used to in amateur Rugby League, where we’d play on cow-pat pitches like the one at Coronation Park. George played on the wing for Orrell before going on to become a notable Lancashire Society referee, and at the time I was in the Wigan RL Schoolboys team.
