These are tough days for Rugby Union with the very ethos of the game being challenged. It’s always been a game for all shapes and sizes, with physical contact or, if you prefer, controlled violence, part of its DNA.
Lots of us watch boxing through eyes that are conflicted: at its best it can be beautiful, but it can also be deeply frightening, and sometimes people die. It’s like that with rugby, where huge hits are a key part of the game, and if they disappear then part of rugby’s appeal will go with them.
