The sureness of touch that has brought records for Chris Ashton this season – no-one has scored more Top 14 tries than him – deserted him in his hour of need.
Toulon full-back Ashton, the former Saracen, did score his 24th of the campaign in a quarter-final play-off at home to Lyon, assumed by most to be an open invitation into the last four.
