Scotland coach Gregor Townsend lamented his side’s collapse in Rome and warned similar indiscipline will spell another defeat by Ireland on the final day of the Six Nations.
The Scots’ could have stayed in title contention with a victory but saw a 22-10 first-half lead eroded after a fourth try was chalked off early in the second half.
“It was our response to that which was very disappointing,” he said. “We gave away penalty after penalty, invited Italy in and they got ahead on the scoreboard. There was huge effort at the end but we left it too late.
