Japan are appearing at their 11th tournament, with their best ever performance coming in 2019, when they made a run to the quarter-final.
The hosts were incredible in the pool stages four years ago as they followed their dramatic victory over South Africa in 2015 by winning four out of four matches against Ireland, Scotland, Samoa and Russia before coming unstuck against the Springboks in the last eight.
