Italy condemned Japan to relegation from the World Rugby U20 Championship as Dewi Passarella scored a hat-trick to give the Azzurrini victory in the 11th-place play-off.
Though both sides had struggled throughout the tournament, they had been known for starting games quickly and it seemed the early stages would be integral. It was Italy who burst out of the blocks, and Passarella profited from sharp interplay between Simone Brisighella and Filippo Bozzoni to score the first try.
