A BRACE of tries from flying wing Elliot Frewen fired Newport to the top of the Premiership table.

Aberavon claimed the game’s first try when dynamic hooker Luke Davies powered over from short range. Newport’s first try came when Matt O’Brien smashed his way through the Wizards defence to touch down, with Reed adding the extras.

Newport were now full of confidence and they extended their lead when Elliot Frewen showed tremendous pace to run in unopposed from 45 metres out.

Aberavon hit back when Newport’s O’Brien attempted to clear his lines, but the ball was charged down, allowing Ashton Evans to score a try which Chris Banfield converted. The Black and Ambers took a 24-14 lead into the interval after Frewen intercepted before racing clear from 50 metres out for a try.

Aberavon began the second half strongly when Davies again showed his strength to touch down. Banfield and Newport’s Will Reed exchanged a couple of penalties to make it a five-point game.

Aberavon lay siege to the visitors’ line in the dying seconds with Newport’s Andrew Mann sent to the sin bin for killing the ball. But Newport’s defence held firm.
