THE Redruth crowd roared their approval as the Reds inflicted a first defeat of the season to Luctonians in a pulsating match.

Redruth head coach Richie Kevern sported a huge grin following the whistle.

He said. “We knew we had to be at our best today against Luctonians. We put some good phases together and were clinical when we got near their line.

“We were disappointed last week losing at Old Reds late on, we worked hard all week and I thought our defence was top drawer today. We will look forward to backing this result up on the road next week.”

Luctonians got off to a great start, an early penalty was kicked to the corner, and from the line-out, -half Owen Randell went to score.

Jamie Hodgkins kicked a fine touchline conversion.

Redruth soaked up Lucs pressure before breaking out of defence, gaining a penalty that set up field position from which they scored through Charlie Levick, young Dean Wills adding the first of his five conversions.

Caleb Montgomery put in a storming run only to be hauled down by star man Will Rigelsford.

Lucs then earned a penalty, which was dispatched between the sticks by Hodgkins.

Redruth regained the lead when centre Tom Georgiou collected his own grubber-kick to dot down under the posts.

Back came Lucs with a well-worked try from try from Jack Goodwin, with Hodgkins’ conversion putting Lucs 17-14 up at the interval.

A break by wing Luke Johnson helped set up Redruth’s third try, the forwards took it on before Wills dived over in the corner.

Lucs were penalised at scrum time, allowing Wills to kick to the corner and set up a catchand-drive that saw Chris

Rovery, Matt Pritchard and Georgiou all make ground, allowing Riglesford to wriggle over near the sticks.

Lucs replied with an unconverted try from skipper Ben Link and then dramatically regained the lead when the busy Montgomery scored their fourth try, bettered by Hodgkins.

With time running out, Rigelsford found a gap to score under the posts, Wills added the extras and then a coolly-struck penalty to secure the win.

After the final whistle a senior Lucs official admitted he was disappointed with his side’s loss.

He said. “It’s always disappointing to lose a game, but credit to Redruth who managed the conditions well.

“We should have had a bigger lead at half-time, and that has probably cost us today.”
