A FAST start and a controlled finish saw Exeter University romp to an emphatic win at Devonport Services.

Past meetings had been evenly shared but this was a more one-sided encounter. Services had much the stronger pack but the students’ backs were outstanding and they made the most of them.

Exeter opened the scoring inside five minutes with a try from Nick Lilly, and a second soon came from Josh McAndrew who pushed his way over from a lineout. Both were converted by Ben Coen.

Staight from the restart, a simple move through the hands by three players put Joe Bailey in under the crossbar, with Coen again converting. The bonus point was secured by Oscar Beckerleg’s try before Services finally went over when a catch and drive gave James McFarlane a try converted by Richard Goldsby-West.

Joe Stansfield added a second, again converted by Richard Goldsby- -West, and it was 28-14 at the interval.

But back came Exeter with Coen converting his own try and there were further scores from Campbell Riddell, Lilly again, Jed Finlay and Louis Gulley.

McFarlane’s late second was little consolation for Services.
