Fylde have scored a whopping 206 points in their opening five games as they sit top of National 2 North but joint head coach Alex Loney is hoping they shore up their defence.
The Lancashire side have secured five bonus point wins from their opening five games which has pleased Loney but the former hooker says there is plenty of room for improvement.
He said: “I’m really happy, I don’t think we’ve been vintage with everything clicking exactly how we wanted it to but that’s the case of early season.
“I’ve said to lots of people that there’s some really tough opposition out there and really quality players and regardless of where you stand in the league, you’ve got to be 100 per cent and make sure you execute the things you want to.
“We’re looking to keep improving but in terms of points and wins, we’re over the moon.”
With Fylde on an impressive winning run, Loney says that the atmosphere around the club is really positive with each part of the club working together efficiently.
He said: “We’re lucky in the club that we have a group of lads who are aligned in where they see themselves in the game; they try hard and want to be competitive and improve but at the same time they want to enjoy each other’s company. I think for a National League rugby squad they actually get it right.
“We always go out there to score tries and the good thing this season is scoring them in a few different ways; whether that be set piece moves or going through multi phases. We’re happy with our attack but equally we need to defend well and I think some of the tighter games will come down to that.”
Despite Fylde’s good start, title rivals Sedgley Park remain unbeaten with Rotherham Titans shortly behind in third and Loney sees the next few weeks as a real test.
He said: “We’ve got to play both in the coming weeks away from home and they’re going to be two massive games.”
