CHESTER claimed their third consecutive win and moved themselves nicely into the hunt for a play-off spot thanks to a bruising victory over Hull RUFC.

A very close first half at Hare Lane saw just one score and it went to the hosts.

Prop Colin Campbell held the ball at the back of a rolling maul to touch down after 20 minutes, with man of the match Callum Bennett converting the score.

The second half did not start so well for Hull, as they were made to battle on with 14 as they saw a man sent to the sin bin.

However, Chester couldn’t take advantage of the extra numbers and, once back up to their full complement, Hull got on the scoreboard through No.8 Latu Makaafi, who turned the ball over before proceeding to power over the try line.

The visitors missed the conversion, but the deficit now was just two points as they dug in to push for a comeback. Hull chased what could have been a winning score late on but Chester’s brickwall defence stood.

The hosts then put the result beyond doubt right at the death when winger Harrison Vare scored their second try, spotting a gap and turning on the afterburners to dive emphatically over the whitewash.

Bennett then confidently added the extras to complete the scoring in what had been an attritional affair.

The result means that the newly-promoted visitors, who had made an eye-catching start to the season by going unbeaten in their first three matches, have now lost back-to-back games.
