Bury St Eds…………..29
Rochford……………….. 3
BURY St Edmund’s were comfortable winners over Rochford in the first meeting between the sides for more than a decade.
The kick off was delayed after the Rochford coach broke down, but when it got under way Bury showed their attacking intent.
The first quarter was an error-strewn affair with neither side able to make an impression on the scoreboard.
Bury’s indiscipline punctuated play and Rochford profited. A series of penalties took play deep into the Bury 22 and, on 23 minutes, another penalty five metres out gave Rochford fly-half Cappaert an easy three points.
A series of plays took Bury into the Rochford 22 and slick handling led to a try by Reed, which he converted.
Moments later, Bury extended their lead.
A quick penalty was halted, leading to a yellow card. A period of sustained pressure resulted in a try for replacement wing Stanway. Reed added the conversion for a 14-3 half-time lead.
Bury added a penalty after 50 minutes, kicked by Reed. They kept possession from the restart and a series of phases led to a try for captain Bursey. After another yellow card for Rochford, Bury grabbed a bonus-point try by Leeson and Reed converted.
