Bury St Ed……..33 Sutton & Eps ….0
BURY banished the morning’s World Cup blues and a run of two successive defeats with a five-try victory.
Flanker Matt Bursey grabbed the headlines as he helped himself to fourtries, but it was a much-improved performance from the Wolfpack against a Sutton side which had plenty of territory but never honestly looked like scoring.
Ben Leng made a welcome return for Bury and his trademark break sent Yas Browne towards the line.
A tap tackle denied the lock, but Shaq Meyers was on hand to round off the move on nine minutes.
For the remainder of the half, Bury were in control. Half-backs Seb Dusi and Kodie Drury- Hawkins kept the tempo high and Bury added two more scores.
On both occasions, Bursey was the right man in the right place to finish off attacking moves created by the three-quarters.
The second half was played in constant rain, reducing the game as a spectacle.
Though the Surrey visitors dominated possession and territory, the attacks lacked the imagination to unpick a determined defence.
In contrast, Bury took their chances. Mike Stanway’s counter-attack was kept alive for Bursey to squeeze over.
Then, a driving maul of fully 25 metres allowed the flanker to finish the scoring on 71 minutes.
