A SUPERB first-half performance paved the way for Dings' victory over at Shaftesbury Park.

The home side controlled field position and possession in the opening half and scored three tries right out of the top drawer.

Reds had their share of the game but were unable to crack the Dings defence and seal the win.

Wing Harry Tovey opened the scoring for Dings in the seventhminute with an unconverted try in the corner.

Reds lock Chris Pursall equalised on 16 minutes, with fly-half Kieran Hill adding the extras to give his side the lead.

Crusaders No.8 Jake Holcombe powered off the back of a five-metre to put his side back in front, with Tovey converting.

A dazzling set piece move saw centre Matt Smith glide over for a converted try on 26 minutes.

Hill slotted a penalty, but Tovey cancelled it out with a three-pointer to make it 22-10 at the interval.

The second 40 was a real arm wrestle, with genuine chances being missed by both sides as the 800-strong crowd held its breath.
