Wimbledon ….33

WIMBLEDON earned just their second victory of the league campaign in a nailbiting encounter against Redruth.

Both sides exchanged early tries after waves of pressure with flanker Niall MacSweeney going over for Wimbledon and prop Loma Kivalu for Redruth.

Two rolling maul tries by Wimbledon from Ben Brooks and Matt Gilbert were answered by Richard Brown from close range but the home side were searching for more.

Two early second half tries from Rhys Morgan and Charlie Esam stretched Wimbledon’s lead to 33-14 but Redruth did not give up and Pale Nonu and Kivalu went over late on.

Wimbledon’s early pressure was rewarded when a charged down kick, deep in Redruth territory was recycled for MacSweeney to go over in the corner.

In an explosive first ten, Redruth came back in waves and levelled following a penetrating line out drive finished by Kivalu.

Wimbledon scored two well-worked forwards tries in quick succession and whilst Redruth went over themselves, the home side earned another double early in the second half.

Captain Morgan provided the fourth try to take the home side two scores clear and Wimbledon had victory in sight.

Redruth mounted a late surge and after several phases the sheer power of Nonu and Kivalu proved too much for the home side as they went over for close range scores.
