Steve Hanley is urging the RFU to copy France and go into the inner cities to grow the sport’s player pool, rather than keep relying on private schools to provide players.
Hanley and his former Sale Sharks team-mate Joe Clark lead the Trafford Schools Rugby initiative that launched last year to encourage children to get into the sport, in an area that is vastly dominated by football and has a decreasing union presence.
Both Hanley’s and Clark’s sons are involved in the programme, as well as England attack coach Richard Wigglesworth’s son Fred.
