Durham gained revenge for Exeter beating them in last year’s Championship final as they battled to a 20-15 victory at Hollow Drift.
Durham led early on after turning the ball over deep inside their own half, with Olly Walker finishing from 60 yards after the ball went wide.
Will Nicholson’s conversion and two penalties helped Durham open up a 13-0 lead, but Exeter had hope as Ross Vintcent sniped from the ruck before feeding Luke Bralsford to make it 13-5 at the break.
