Exeter boss Rob Baxter looked perplexed after seeing his side suffer the ignominy of falling to the basement boys of the Premiership table.

With the Devon side’s losing run stretching to five games, Baxter said: “That was a little different to some other games we’ve lost in that it’s hard to put a finger on a key area.

“We managed the yellow card period well, that was an improvement, but then it’s tough to talk about the amount of penalties we gave away, how poor we were at clearing rucks, how easily we lost the ball, with it being stripped, lost on the floor or just popped away.

“I imagine some of those issues are psychological around where the team is at the minute, and a little bit of belief is missing.

“Newcastle knocked us off our stride, and we never got back on.

“When you’re strong, positive and on a run when everything just seems to work, you’re not in two minds, you don’t force things too much.

“But we’ve got a young team and they’re rightly finding it’s hot in the furnace in the Premiership.”
