Newcastle boss Steve Diamond seemed out of answers on how Newcastle can end their Premiership losing streak and shake-off being the league’s whipping boys.

Diamond said: “We were beaten all over the shop. We couldn’t keep hold of the ball and when they turned it over, they capitalised on it very well.

“Sale’s a good side and one that’s been developed over 10 years, not just overnight.

“We’re going to struggle with the wherewithal and personnel we’ve got. We can’t control the game with Ethan (Grayson) at 10.

“He’s a centre and he’s doing a grand job, but we’re a week or two away from the 10s coming back.

“The job is keeping the gang that we’ve got motivated until the end of the season so we can achieve the goal of getting some wins and staying in the competition.”

On his 50th Sale start, full-back Joe Carpenter said: “Tonight’s a proud moment for me. We wanted back-to-back wins after beating Gloucester last week, it’s massively important to keep this momentum going.”
