Former Sale Sharks Steve Hanley and Joe Clark are leading the Trafford Schools Rugby initiative that launched last year to encourage children to get into rugby union.
Both Hanley’s and Clark’s sons are involved in the programme, with the idea deriving from the large decrease in grammar schools playing union, while no comprehensive schools in the Trafford area play at all.
With football the dominant sport, rugby union was dealt a blow when U12s football moved from a Saturday to a Sunday, the same time as rugby in the area, with the majority picking the round ball.
