SARACENS director of rugby Mark McCall, returning from his break, was impressed by side’s desire. “The level of fight and desire was incredible and earnt us an important win. We kept on giving them opportunities by conceding penalties but it is tough when you are under pressure.
“Mako is a world class player and has been captaining the side so that was a blow (when he went off) but Richard Barrington rolled back the years and gave us 78 minutes despite not playing a huge amount of rugby recently.
“Nick Tompkins was outstanding in defence and our whole back division did really well.”
Leicester head coach Steve Borthwick said: “Saracens are the best team in the league, I have said it all along. This performance shows there is a lot of potential and growth in this team.
“We have been here 18 months, Saracens have been together for a decade. We saw what a good team they are. They have been at the top of European rugby for years.”
