NEWPORT maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they thrashed Pontypridd on Thursday night.

The Black and Ambers took Pontypridd to the cleaners physically and opened the scoring when Luke Crane took an inside pass from Cameron Lewis to score after a mere 49 seconds. They were soon celebrating their second when Rhys Jenkins powered over from close following a period of sustained pressure from the hosts.

Matt O’Brien was the architect of their third try as the Pontypridd defence bought his dummy, before he raced 40 metres. The influential centre drew in the defender, before putting loosehead prop Louis Jones over.

Newport got temporarily reduced to 14 men on the stroke of half-time when Kyle Tayler got shown a yellow for killing the ball at the breakdown.

But it didn’t stop Ty Morris’ side from securing their try bonus point before the break as Dafydd Smith squeezed over in a corner. O’Brien claimed Newport’s fifth try when he hit a tremendous angle to run in unopposed from halfway.

Pontypridd claimed a consolation try via Dale Stuckey intercepting a loose pass, but Newport had the final say with Matthew Powell scoring.
