ROB Baxter’s trenchant statement in favour of promotion and relegation this week shows that not all Premiership clubs are convinced that a ring-fence is the right direction for either the top league, or the rest of the English club game.
Baxter’s view that it would be morally indefensible for Exeter to deny other clubs the right to progress in the way in which they have done – by winning a series of promotions through the league system – is a triumph of principle over expedient self-interest.
