NEW Zimbabwe coach Pieter De Villiers, who led South Africa to a Lions and Tri-Nations success in 2009, has taken over the reins for the World Cup qualifiers this summer and is determined to reach out to the many fine Zimbabwean players who fled the country in recent years.
For many it’s too late, the likes of David Denton, David Pocock and Beast Mtawarira were snapped up quickly by other countries, but there are still some quality ‘Zimbos’ who might be tempted to try and reach RWC2019 with their native country.
Chief among those would be Dave Ewers, left, who is beginning to look back to his best after a long injury lay-off at Exeter and another talented back row man Mike Williams at Leicester. In fact Zimbabwe always seem to produce great back rowers. Don Armand is another but he has been capped by England. Worcester’s Marco Mama is still eligible. Others who can expect a call are Western Province wing Sam Phiri, Blue Bulls fly-half Eli Snyman and Pumas flanker Lambert Groenewald.
