JOHN Gwilliam has been unique among Wales captains for the last 65 years and he will remain so for as long as it takes someone to match his feat of captaining two Grand Slam teams (1950 and 1952).
He died just before Christmas at the age of 93.
The Wales-England programme paid due tribute to his achievement, not simply on the rugby field but in the Second World War as a tank commander and in peace as the revered headmaster of a public school on Merseyside.
On an evening when the Welsh Rugby Union gave Joost van der Westhuizen the big-screen treatment and a minute's silence, a fleeting mention of John Gwilliam would have been the very least he deserved.
There is a lot to be said for looking after your own.
