NIGEL Melville, the RFU’s professional rugby director, has made the right call by going on record in these pages that one-up, onedown promotion and relegation has been agreed until 2020, and that he envisages no changes where the gangway between the Premiership and Championship is concerned.
What is concerning, however, is the rumour that some Championship clubs are prepared to agree to a suspension of promotion-relegation after 2020 for a number of years on the ‘promise’ of increased funding. Talk about turkeys voting for Christmas.
