Alan Solomons has confirmed flanker Marco Mama should be out for ‘a few months’ after requiring hospital treatment on a dead leg.
The Worcester Warriors flanker experienced complications arising from a knock to his leg in the 27-20 home win over Gloucester last Sunday.
Rushing 80 miles to John Radcliffe Hospital, a specialist in trauma injuries based in Oxford, the stand-in Warriors captain underwent a procedure to alleviate the pain.
Director of rugby Solomons added 28-year-old Mama will have a further procedure later this week and is expected to be fine for the start of next season but will miss a chunk of the off-season.
“The doctors did a fine job,” Solomons told BBC Hereford & Worcester.
“We’re very fortunate to have such fantastic hospitals in this country,” he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.
“He got a dead leg and the consequence of it was that on Sunday night it became very painful for him and he was admitted to hospital.
“He was admitted to the John Radcliffe, but he was very well looked after. They are specialists in this sort of injury, and will do a further procedure later in the week.
“With those kind of injuries, he’ll be out for a good few months. But there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be back for the start of next season.”
Mama has taken lead of the team in the absence of GJ van Velze and Ryan Mills through injuries of their own.
However, no.8 van Velze is likely to return for the Warriors for their final two games of the season – the win over Gloucester assuring them of their Premiership status.
