It is not unreasonable to presume that those serving on the judiciary of the Champions Cup are appointed because they know a red card offence when they see one.
The saga over Josh Caulfield’s sending-off in Galway last month would suggest that is most definitely not the case.
The vast majority of those who witnessed the Bristol lock stamping on Finlay Bealham’s head saw it as a clear and obvious red. The disciplinary tribunal appointed by European Professional Club Rugby saw it as nothing of the sort.
